Fabric Requirements and Cutting Guide:
FabricRequirements: is based on 42" wide fabric
1. Light fabric (Background and outer Border). 1 1/2 yards.
2. Dark fabric (Star Points). 1/2 yard
3. Medium. 1/4 yard.
4. Bright Accent fabric (sashing centers) 1/8 yard.
5. Medium Multi Fabric (sashing) 1/3 yard.
6. Binding 1/3 yard.
7. Backing 1 yard
8. Batting 36 x 36
Cutting Guide
You will be given the Cutting instructions sheet at the time you sign up for the class. The fabric
yardage requirements are listed on this guide also. Please have your fabrics cut into the required
number and width of strips and labeled with the width. Do not sub-cut the strips until class. Some of
these strips will be sub-cut and others made into strip sets.
Instructions for sub-cutting and sewing strip-sets will be discussed in class.
Suggestion: cut a small square of each of your fabric and glue it to the fabric requirement and cutting
guide. This will help you remember which fabric you chose for your Light background, Dark star
points, medium, Bright Accent sashing centers, and Medium Multi fabric for sashing.
Requirement for the class: Beginner to intermediate skills.
1. Mexican Stars pattern
2. Machine in good working order with foot control, cords & piecing foot-(preferably a 1/4 inch foot).
3. Basic sewing tools-Scissors, rotary cutter and cutting mat, rulers (a long ruler 6 x 24 and a 9.5" square ruler), pins, thread (50 or 60 weight) that goes well with your color choice of fabric, Machine needle 80/12, iron and pressing mat, seam ripper, and any extra tools you use when sewing. Optional is fabric glue stick.
Note: This pattern looks complicated but it is very easy. This pattern consists of Block A and Block B and Corner Border C blocks. Placement of your units when putting them together is important.
The center block has 4 A units, and the side blocks has 2 A and 2 B units. The border block has 1 B and 1 C unit and 2 squares.
